Signs that Your Sarasota Pet May Need Dermatology Care

In addition to visible signs of a skin problem, your pet may also be giving you some other clues, such as excessive scratching, hair loss, and sneezing. We can treat their allergies and skin issues, usually with a simple antihistamine or topical ointment. Even though most dermatology issues are mild and not indicative of a greater health issue, it is important that they are treated promptly and comprehensively to avoid infection and further complications. Below are a few of the most common signs and symptoms of dermatological issues in pets, and we recommend that you bring them in for a visit if any of these symptoms persist for more than a day or two:

  • Skin problems such as irritation which can cause your pet to repeatedly lick a certain spot or rub up against furniture in an effort to relieve their discomfort.
  • Hair loss, especially when it occurs in patches can be a sign of a more serious problem such as mange. Typically hair loss occurs due to repeated scratching and licking that can be curtailed with the use of a topical cream. In some situations, it may be necessary for your pet to wear a conical collar.
  • Rashes can break out overnight and disappear just as quickly. If your pet's rash lingers for more than a day or two it may require an anti-fungal or anti-bacterial medication. We recommend that all rashes are checked out by our staff, especially when they are related to overheating or dehydration.
  • Allergies can manifest differently in pets than in humans, and food allergies often cause skin disruptions that can cause your pet discomfort.
